More Questions About Great Expectations

Another part of this book that I did not fully understand was in chapter 38 when Pip and Estella are spending a lot of time together at Mrs. Brandley's house. Pip says on page 325, "The nature of my relations with her (Estella), which placed me on terms of familiarity without placing me on terms of favour, conduced to my distraction." Since they are spending so much time together I am wondering what officially is Pip and Estella's relationship status? Are they just friends, dating, engaged, or anything of that sort?

  1. Pip and Estella are more acquantinces than friends. Estella acts as if they are forced to spend time with each other and act like friends, but Pip thought that he would soon be engaged to Estella as part of his expectations. This was still when he thought Ms. Havisham was his benefactor so he knows that Estella wasn't meant for him now. There really isn't much of a chance of Estella and Pip becoming engaged because Estella is engaged to Bentley Drummle.

  2. Pip as we know is in love with Estella, but Estella doesn't feel that way, or at least doesn't show any sign or say anything that would lead me to believe that she did feel the same way he did. Pip I think is desperately trying to get Estella to love him, but I don't necessarily think that Estella even wants to be his friend and definitely not wanting to be engaged to Pip, she is starting to "date" in a way, Bently Drummle

  3. i kinda had the same question, what I've been thinking, is that pretty much, Pip has fallen for her, but Estella is just going to break his heart. Or, she will try not to, because she actually has a conscience. But, only time will tell
