Catcher in the Rye: Motif

The dominant literary element in this book is motif. The main character, Holden Caulfield, has a red hunting hat that he always wears and describes. I think that this hat is a symbol for his immaturity. He is always describing the different ways that he wears it and he is very passionate about the hat.

I think the author uses this literary technique so heavily because he wants to express the books theme of immaturity and growing up. Whenever Holden puts the hat on, it is usually followed by an immature or chaldish act.

  1. I completely agree how the red hunting hat , that Holden owns, is a symbol of his immaturity; He always has his hat on after he does something childish.
